The short answer
Running a residential ice bath in Dubai costs roughly 100 to 250 AED per month in electricity, depending almost entirely on where the chiller sits and what month it is. Water is nearly free: a full change of a 490 litre tub costs about 4 to 6 AED at current DEWA rates. The two decisions that actually control your running cost are chiller placement (shade or sun) and chiller size (matched to the tub or fighting it).
Nobody else in this market publishes these numbers. Here is how they break down, including the working, so you can check them against your own DEWA bill.
What the electricity actually costs
The method
A typical 1 horsepower residential chiller draws around 0.9 kilowatts while running. It does not run constantly; it cycles on when the water warms and off when it reaches temperature. The share of the day it spends running is the duty cycle, and in Dubai the duty cycle is a function of heat load: ambient temperature, sun on the tub and unit, how good the tub insulation and cover are, and how often people get in.
DEWA residential electricity is billed in slabs. A villa running AC through summer typically pays at the upper slabs, so the marginal rate on your chiller is 32 to 38 fils per kWh plus the fuel surcharge (6 fils per kWh as of mid 2026), call it 38 to 44 fils per kWh.

Two things to notice. First, the spread between the best and worst placement is roughly a factor of two, every month, forever. Shade is the cheapest upgrade an ice bath will ever get. Second, even the worst case is less than most people's coffee habit. The running cost is not the reason to hesitate about cold water; the reason to hesitate is whether you will use it, which is what renting first is for.
Pulling down vs holding
The expensive phase is the first one. Cooling 490 litres from Dubai summer tap water (around 35 degrees) to 8 degrees means removing roughly 15 kWh of heat, which a 1 horsepower chiller does over several hours of continuous running. After that, a covered, insulated tub only needs the chiller to hold the line. Practical consequences:
- Leave the system on and covered rather than cooling from scratch each time. Re-cooling from warm costs more than holding cold.
- The insulated cover is not an accessory. An uncovered tub in summer is an open fridge door.
What the water actually costs
A 490 litre change is about half a cubic metre. At DEWA residential water rates (7.70 to 10.12 AED per cubic metre plus the 1.10 fuel surcharge), that is 4 to 6 AED per change. Change weekly without filtration and water costs you about 20 AED per month.
With a filtered and sanitised system, like our commercial unit, water changes stretch much further, so a filtered setup costs less to run in water than a takeaway coffee costs to drink. Water is simply not the operating cost in this market. Electricity and maintenance are.
Chiller sizing in 45 degree heat
The sizing logic that matters here, and that generic guides written for European garages get wrong:
- 0.5 horsepower: fine for small tubs (under 300 litres) kept indoors. Outdoors in a Dubai summer it will run near constantly, which is how chillers die young.
- 1 horsepower: the correct match for a 300 to 500 litre residential tub, shaded, in this climate. This is what we run in our standard rental fleet, because it holds temperature in August without living at 100% duty.
- 2 horsepower and up (commercial): for larger tubs, multiple daily users, unavoidable sun exposure, or anywhere a slow recovery between sessions is unacceptable (teams, gyms, hotel spas).
The rule underneath all of it: a chiller that has to run flat out to hold temperature is undersized for its position, even if the brochure says otherwise. Dubai in July is the brochure's worst case plus ten degrees.

For context against the decision most readers are actually weighing: our standard ice bath and chiller rents at 1,600 AED per month including VAT, installed, serviced and maintained by us, and the same 490 litre setup sells outright at 13,997 AED. The running cost is the same either way. What renting removes is the maintenance risk, the resale question, and the possibility of owning a very cold piece of furniture you stopped using in March, which is a cost no tariff table captures.
Who this is not for
If the only spot you have is unshaded and you are unwilling to change that, your running costs and your repair bills will both be the worst version of the numbers above, and we would rather tell you that here than after delivery. And if you have never kept a cold habit before, do not buy hardware to find out. Rent for a month; the first DEWA bill and the first 6am plunge will both tell you the truth.
