The Brief
Ben had a ground floor spare room, roughly 7 x 6 metres, and wanted commercial grade equipment rather than home fitness products. Every piece had to offer real exercise variety, it had to last for decades, and the flooring had to be free of the rubber smell most gym floors give off.
What We Did
The floor first. We laid pure EPDM gym flooring, and the reason matters: the smell of cheap gym flooring is volatile chemicals releasing into the air, which you then breathe hard during training. Pure EPDM does not do that. On it we installed Life Fitness commercial equipment, the exact range Fitness First ran in its clubs until its recent switch to Technogym: a Smith machine, a dual adjustable pulley, a StairMaster, a treadmill, a cross trainer and an adjustable bench, with a premium dumbbell set to complete the strength side. The layout gives space to move between stations without wasting any of the 42 square metres.

The Result
A private gym that trains like a good commercial club, without the membership or the drive. Commercial equipment built for thousands of users a week will outlast anything sold for home use, and the EPDM floor means the room smells like a room, not a rubber factory. Ben has since come back to us for a second project.
